{"id":565,"date":"2012-08-16T19:45:32","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T00:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/?p=565"},"modified":"2012-08-16T19:45:32","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T00:45:32","slug":"dunning-krugerification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/?p=565","title":{"rendered":"Dunning Krugerification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who hangs out with writers for a while is bound to hear a fair amount of whining (or &#8220;existential angst&#8221;, as we prefer to call it). \u00a0Lord knows we have a <a title=\"Well, I Certainly Don\u2019t Like to Complain\" href=\"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/?p=340\">lot<\/a> to<a title=\"Argh\" href=\"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/?p=82\"> whine<\/a> <a title=\"Data\" href=\"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/?p=99\">about<\/a>, but one of the main things that writers worry about is being exposed as frauds who don&#8217;t know how to write. \u00a0In part, this is because writers tend to be big readers, and thus get exposed to lots of writing that makes them feel inferior. \u00a0But I think the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2012\/06\/the-dunning-kruger-effect-why-the-incompetent-dont-know-theyre-incompetent.php\">Dunning-Kruger effect<\/a> also plays a role. \u00a0I&#8217;d encourage everyone to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steamfantasy.it\/blog\/manuali\/unskilled_unaware_of_it.pdf\"> read about it<\/a>\u00a0(Dunning and Kruger won the Ig Nobel prize for it in 2000, after all), but if I may be permitted to oversimplify, it seems that incompetent people don&#8217;t realize that they are\u00a0incompetent, basically because they are too stupid to know how stupid they are. \u00a0Competent people, paradoxically, tend to\u00a0underestimate\u00a0their own abilities,\u00a0because\u00a0they assume that things that come easy to them probably come easy to others, and because they know how much they have yet to learn.<\/p>\n<p>So it is actually a good sign if you are a writer and convinced that your own writing sucks. \u00a0The other interesting aspect of all this is that while competent tend to be poor at evaluating themselves, they are good at evaluating others. \u00a0So with all that in mind, and because<a href=\"https:\/\/nilaewhite.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/08\/writing-tests\/\"> some people really seem to like tests<\/a>, I have devised the Dunning-Kruger flowchart:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-569\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DunningKrugerFlowchart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DunningKrugerFlowchart.jpg 517w, https:\/\/bluecandlesociety.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DunningKrugerFlowchart-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, perceptive readers will note that the competent people one is asked to poll for this flowchart likely don&#8217;t realize how competent they are, on account of the very effect the flowchart is based on. \u00a0No problem!
