Rather, a construction such as \u201cdue to\u201d or \u201cowing to\u201d should be used, or the sentence should be rewritten to be more clear.<\/p>\n<p>For example, instead of \u201cHe\u2019s going to Florida next week, because of a friend\u2019s wedding,\u201d one should write, \u201cHe\u2019s going to Florida next week *for* a friend\u2019s wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Writers who observe this rule thereby uphold an important distinction; a sentence such as \u201cBecause of the promised bonus, he decided to teach an extra class next summer\u201d makes clear that the promised bonus is the cause of the *decision* (which has already happened), not the cause of the *teaching an extra class* (which hasn\u2019t happened yet, so doesn\u2019t yet have a cause).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Naturally, it is <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/linguafranca\/2012\/10\/12\/one-for-the-usage-books\/\">made up from whole cloth<\/a>, but what else is new?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I hope everyone is sure to follow this rule when writing: \u201cBecause of\u201d should not be used to modify a sentence in the future tense, since it is a logical fallacy to impute a cause to something that is not (yet) true.
